The concept of a Wall Bed or murphy bed is simple; it allows you to have a room with more than one purpose.

When you put a mattress, box spring, headboard and frame in a room it is a bedroom. If you use your bedroom as a home office you are going to look silly Skypeing Chinese suppliers with a mattress in the background. I know I’ve done it. Now take that same room and put in a Wall Bed and your supplier will see a nice cabinet in the back ground and you are in your office.

At Best Sleep Centre we sell Wallbeds of the highest quality made of solid birch plywood and birch veneers. No MDF just real wood. We ship anywhere in Canada and any local cabinet company can install it for you. Visit our web page and after you find what you like email us for a quote. Compare prices at any local shop and we will be able to provide you with better quality at the same or lower prices than your local dealers.

Wall Beds have come a long way since the era of the Keystone cops. Sitting on the wall as opposed to in the wall and many have tables or desks built in. Wall Beds are the best option to turn you daughter’s old bedroom into the dual use room you always wished it was. In lofts, student quarters, or bachelor suites the improved use of space will increase the potential rental income that a living space can demand. It can also increase the desire of the prospective renters to occupy that space. They look cool and ours come with lifetime guarantees on the mechanisms (working parts).

The many different styles these products come in now; wallbeds available to be used in any size room, in horizontal or vertical designs, twin, full or queen size. Many have space for hanging clothes and even built in nightstands. Our units let you use up to an eleven inch mattress so comfort is no longer an issue.

So the next time you are thinking of moving because your home is too small; think about a Wall Bed. They are way less expensive than a real estate agent’s commission.

“How much do you weigh?” and other questions you should ask yourself when buying a mattress.

If you have been following my blog post on “How to Buy a Mattress” you might be saying; gee this is getting complicated and I can tell you my competitors hope that you are finding it complicated. The idea here is that you are spending $500.00 to $6000.00 on a product that you will spend one third of your life in for the next seven to ten years. The more serious you take this for one or two days, the more money you save, the more comfortable you will be and the better you will sleep for the next long while.

Getting serious for two hours or two days depending on your shopping style is what I’m asking you to do and I will pay you big money to do it.

The old style of buying a bed just because it’s (pretend) 50% or 60% off has got to go. I think I’ve made that point. So I’ll make another instead of harping on the same one; although I just had a young couple in the store whose parents told them to go to Sears because beds were 60% percent off “this weekend only”. They spent less money here for a better bed regular price. Done!

When you get down to it the more you and your partner (if you have one) weigh, the more you need to spend on your mattress, or the more you need to realize and be told the truth about how long this purchase is going to last. I weigh 150 lbs. or so, soaking wet, and my wife I won’t say (smarter than that), but I will say less than me. If I spend $800.00 dollars on a mattress set it will last me-alone longer than it would with the combined weight of 450 lbs. from a different couple. “Why?” you ask, “I thought warranty covered that”. Warranty does not cover that as warranty for EVERY manufacturer covers manufacturer defects not wear and tear. We sell heavier and lighter people the same mattresses every day; we are just honest enough to tell them to expect different lifespans from their purchases.

See we want your business for the next 50 years and we are willing to wait three years to get it. If we are honest with you and you buy from us we have you for life. If we are honest with you and you still buy somewhere else; when that purchase falls apart in three years we will get you then. We are willing to wait. So ask yourself “how much do I weigh” and be willing to spend more money to accomplish the needs of your body than a lighter customer, or be willing to replace your purchase more often.

Bare in in all mattresses will get “body impressions”. Watch David’s informational video on Mattress Body Impressions.

Your health determines cost as well.

The no arthritis, no back problems, sleeps well anywhere person can spend less. If the people with these problems want help to reduce these issues they must invest in their health. A good mattress is not going to solve every problem that you have, but it will sure help and the wrong one for you, even if it’s good quality, can make things much worse.

If done right this is a long term purchase and as such, the more thought you put into it the happier you will be.

The retail industry as a whole wants you to think ‘on sale’, ‘nice salesperson’, ‘free delivery’, ‘huge discount’ I’ll buy here! We want you to think about how the product is made and compare your needs to the product offered. Think about this the same way you do about a car or computer. If you do, you will sleep better longer, spend less money doing it, probably take less drugs over the years, visit the doctor a little less and generally be a happier person and or couple. Mattresses are the most important piece of furniture in your home and the least expensive per use, no matter how much you spend, unless you buy the wrong one for you, in which case quality won’t help you.

Do some homework, do some thinking and buy the right mattress for you and we will both be very happy to see each other seven, or eight, or ten years from now for a new one for you, or sooner when you bring in family or friends for the same great service.

Best Sleep Centre products can be bought on line and shipped anywhere in the world.

A good quality pillow is the cheapest and easiest way for anyone to increase the amount of sleep they are getting each night. I always say mattresses are the least expensive furniture in your home no matter how much you spend. Well the pillow is the very least expensive sleep-aid you can buy. Having a quality, properly fitted pillow, can save you a bundle on sleep-aid products and massage. To buy a pillow is really quite simple. In other blogs I see writers go on about this type of pillow for side sleepers and this type for back sleepers and another type for ‘floppers’. I can say after twenty-something years in the sleep business there is not one type of pillow for one type of sleeper. It boils down to this.

Like pants, pillows fit, or don’t fit.

The type of pillow you need is determined by how big you are and your neck to shoulder ratio. Next, you consider what’s most comfortable and durable. Then, out of the different types of quality foams and fibers in the market, you decide what feels best to you.

Do these four things when buying a pillow. Save money and sleep better.

Buy a good pillow

If you are a small person, a good pillow will be smaller and softer, but it will still take up the area from your shoulder to your neck, to the mattress. Very few people stay on their side, or back, all night and having your neck lined up straight with your back in all positions will help you sleep better.

Take your time choosing your pillow

There is no 222-2222 for a quick quality pillow like there is for a quality pizza. Take twenty minutes to half an hour and find a bed that feels like yours at home in the store and try different pillows until you find one that fits you. Pulling a $15.00 or $5.00 pillow off the shelf at a grocery store is no way to save money on pillows. Doing this will reward you with a large collection of pillows, but not a good night’s sleep.

Size matters

At Best Sleep Centre we have developed the Hal Anderson pillow. It’s a pillow for big people. For those of us who know Hal; he is Winnipeg’s most popular Morning DJ. Hal is a big guy, 475 lbs to be fair. If you weigh 225 and have folded every pillow you have ever had in two, this pillow is for you. In the last two years we have sold 2500 pillows of various styles. About a year ago we developed our own pillow for larger customers who could not find anything to FIT them. The Hal Anderson pillow is heavy and made of the highest quality five lb SpaceFoam. Don’t hit anyone with it. You’ll be charged with assault. It feels like an uncooked loaf of bread and fits the neck to shoulder ratio of big people perfectly. It starts hard and melts to your shape, relieving all pressure and aligns the neck to the spine of big people correctly.

Buy cheap, buy twice, or even thrice

An expensive pillow costs $20.00. Here’s why; you won’t use it and it won’t stay the way it felt in the store for more than a year. A cheap pillow costs between $50.00 and $120.00 dollars. They will last 3 to 5 years and will help you sleep better. So take your time picking them.

Final Thoughts

I sometimes have to remind people you get what you pay for. I have people tell me things like “I don’t like SpaceFoam pillows or Latex pillows” and when I ask why they tell me they bought a pillow once and did not like it. Whenever I ask where they bought it from, it inevitably was from their favourite place to buy steaks or case-lots of Christmas paper. There are different quality levels for everything and once something is proven to work at $200.00, people then make other versions for a $100.00. If it’s a good company that will work, but if they knock it off for $20.00 nothing is the same as the $200.00 item except the shape and basic ingredient. A TempurPedic TM pillows cost up to $280.00. It’s a great pillow, twenty four hours a day 365 days a year fifteen channels at a time, advertising and research and development makes it cost what it costs. With less advertising costs involved we can get out great quality pillows of the same standard down to between $100.00 and $129.00 . Discount city cannot get it down to $20.00. It is not the same product, not the same weight and not the same composition of the foam. So do yourself a favour and take your time with this purchase and buy quality. We source and design other pillows from $49.00 and up. All of the highest quality. Buying a proper pillow will in the end help you sleep better and that’s what this blog is about.

Why do we need mattress covers?

Before I worked at Best Sleep Centre, I worked a stint as a vacuum salesman. One thing I took away from that experience was that mattresses are a lot dirtier than I ever imagined (if you are squeemish I apologize for the rest of this paragraph). For the vacuum demonstration we would do all the “our vacuum is better than your vacuum” tests that you’ve seen before on the shopping channel. One test I was not familiar with, was the Mattress test. We were trained to ask potential customers as kindly and respectfully as possible to do a small demonstration on their mattress. I would pull the sheets back, put in a black filter in the bag area and turn the vacuum on and hold it stationary on the mattress for five seconds. After turning the vacuum off, I would take out the small black filter and there would be up to one inch of dead skin pulled out of the mattress. Depending on how old the mattress was, sometimes the cake of skin was only an 1/8 of an inch if the mattress was a year or so old. Every person that saw this demonstration had an expression of disbelief. This was not some demonstration mattress I brought in from the van, this was their mattress.

Some Health Facts About Mattress Hygiene

The Human body loses at least a half-litre of body fluids from the mouth and skin pores every night. We shed millions of skin flakes or at least one full layer of skin every thirty days. This is why a mattress is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria, mould and Dust Mites (Dust Mite faeces being a major cause of asthma, eczema and rhinitis). A shocking statistic I ran across was that an unprotected, four month old mattress, there is 100,000 to 2 million dust mites!

Choosing A Proper Mattress Protector

What I suggest to use as a mattress protector should protect your mattress without sacrificing feel and comfort. We carry a line of mattress covers that will protect your mattress from dead skin, Dust Mites, pet dander, accidental spills and food/beverage stains. Come into your nearest Best Sleep Centre and ask to see a demonstration of the Mattress Protectors that are waterproof but breathable. They will help you enjoy the feel of your mattress and keep it clean for years to come.

At Best Sleep Centre we believe that your mattress is the most important piece of furniture in your home, but we are not the only ones. Feng Shui is the Chinese art, or practice, of positioning objects. It is a system of aesthetics used to achieve the maximum harmony between the Yin Yan flow of energy of in an environment, like a bedroom for instance.

We are not experts on Feng Shui, but we know mattresses and bedroom furniture and because we’re committed to help our customers “sleep better” we are happy to pass on whatever useful information we can find about improving your sleep quality. The art of Feng Shui suggests that the height and placement, the decor, the head-board and mattress quality are important factors in creating an environment where you can rest and revitalize. Here is a detailed list of Feng Shui instructions to improve the energy flow in your bedroom:

Clear the space around your bed.

You should be able to see the door to the room but not be in line with it.

The bed should be balanced with two side tables not one.

The colours of the bedding should be soft muted tones.

Headboards made from solid wood, or upholstered are ideal for Feng Shui.

The mattress should be raised off the floor.

Avoid sleeping under heavy ceiling beams.

Artwork should be uplifting and uncluttered.

Open windows when possible.

Use an aromatherapy diffuser with eucalyptus, pine or tea tree oil.

Use soft lighting and candles.

Keep all the doors closed at night, including the bedroom door, closet and bathroom.

Feng Shui advises that you do not sleep on a used mattress.

We won’t try to explain why on Feng Shui terms, but we know from our perspective that a good quality mattress is the best furniture investment you will make, to contribute to your health and well being. It’s common sense really.

Best Sleep Centre delivers mattresses and bedroom furniture all throughout Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Southern Ontario. Our showrooms are located throughout Winnipeg in St. James, Nairn, St.Vital, Morden, Brandon, Steinbach and in Portage La Prairie.

Continued from “How To Buy A Mattress – Part 2″

I’m finding it easy to use buying a car as a point of reference as it is something that we are all more familiar with. If two cars look the same, they both have four cylinders, they are both blue and they both get 34 miles to the gallon, so what else would you compare?

Would you compare the leather or cloth, Bose or GMC stereo, mags or wheels, full spare or donut? It’s the same in the mattress business. They all can look the same to the untrained eye and the customer always has an untrained eye. There are ways to build a great mattress and there are ways to build a mattress that looks exactly the same and feels exactly the same “in the store”. If you are not careful you will pay more for the one with lower quality components, especially if you want to buy your mattress at 50% off, or think you can out-deal the “Sleeping Beauties” of Canada. Here is what to look for.

Tricks of The Trade – Convoluted Foam

If you have a three inch piece of foam and you have a ten dollar knife and you cut the foam in half width wise; you end up with two pieces of foam one and half inches each. If you have a three inch piece of foam and a $50,000.00 knife and a computer program you can cut that same three inch piece of foam in half and get 2 pieces of foam that are both three inches thick. Each piece takes up the same volume, however each piece weighs half as much as it did before.

Click here to view the video on YouTube.

I can use these two new three inch pieces of convoluted foam to build two beds, or I can make the same bed three inches thicker by adding nothing in weight to the mattress. This also makes the mattress feel softer than before the foam was convoluted, but only for a short period of time; bare in mind warranty does not cover when the feel of the mattress changes. Foam with weight is foam with quality and lasting power. The flat surface foam (non-convoluted) holds its feel and it holds its shape better than foam that has been convoluted (convoluted foam is 55 percent of the price of a full three inch piece of non-convoluted foam).

Conclusion

When a bed has convoluted foam in it; it should cost less than a mattress that has none. A mattress that has more than one piece of this material in it is what’s called a “Looker” and if you are not careful you will buy a $400.00 mattress for $1800.00 and get a $500.00 flat screen included free. When you buy a mattress look at what it’s made of, not how much the price is reduced when you refuse to pay their first ask because their last ask will still be more than it’s worth. Mattresses are sold this way every day.

Continued from “How To Buy A Mattress – Part 1″

Remember last week’s lesson:

Shop by examining components.

Look at the top of the line most expensive mattresses in every store you visit and “learn”.

Make the sales person “teach” you why this mattress in their store is the most expensive.

Now, let’s follow up.

A very expensive mattress is all Latex, for example, so the less Latex the cheaper and the more Latex the more expensive. Pocket Coils are more expensive than other types of coils and Space Foam in a mattress makes them very expensive. If the most expensive mattresses are full of Latex and Space Foam and or Pocket Coil combinations you need to figure out, in THIS store, what you get for your money.

Click here to view the video on YouTube.

The Question Is

What do you get when you spend more in THIS STORE. Get them to give you a SPECIFICATION SHEET SPECIFIC TO THE MATTRESS YOU LIKE IN THEIR STORE. Not a generic brochure. A specific sheet outlining exactly how the mattress you like in that store is built. Think of it like a label you EXPECT to see on all the food and clothes you buy.

The KEY thing YOU need to do is be an informed consumer and demand the stores hand out specific brochures on the product you wish to buy from them. They DO NOT want to do this and will fight you on it, giving you excuses like its trade secret or ask who you work for. The answer is you would not put up with this in any other product purchase so why do you allow it here. The point of this is to get the industry to change and that will make it possible to pay less for your next mattress. When the purchase is comparable and no longer blind you will pay less.

Another Example

You are buying a computer and the salesman tells you what’s in it but refuses to write it all down for you. He says “Its 50% off and don’t shop by what’s in it, that’s too complicated, shop by how it looks and how it feels to you when you look at it.” You would be out of there in a heartbeat never to return.

When I buy a bed the rep doesn’t come to my office and say “the mattresses are 50% off this week. Don’t ask what’s in them, just trust me and buy from me they are 50% off this week”. He brings me a list of what’s in the mattress, for instance: how much Latex, how much Space Foam, how many coils, what type of coils and is it foam encased or not. Then, he gives me a sheet with ALL the info on it and I decide by comparing it to all the other mattresses that I can get for the same price. If the consumer spent 4 hours going through this process while making this “very important health related purchase”, that consumer would save between $500 and $3000.00 dollars depending on what they want to spend.

Why do some consumers feel compelled to do this? Often its cultural to insist to never pay retail or to dicker and squeeze. The problem with this idea is the seller knows the game better than you do and has raised his MSRP to a point where he is ready for your best assault. He has his retail price and if you pay that the sales person can retire for the day. He has his bottom line price, and here the salesman makes very little. The Problem is, even if you get the salesman to give the product for the lowest price possible you are STILL over-paying what you would pay at Best Sleep Centre for the same product if you were comparing how both products were built and just pay us what we are asking. Remember the ladies who drove 8 hours, dickered them down $500.00 and over-paid $1200.00? That’s a different business model. Would you walk into Walmart or Super Value and ask for a discount on clothes or bananas?

Best Sleep Centre is the only company at the date of this publication that willingly hands out specific brochures, or as we call them, spec sheets. They are even printable off our website. If you want to get the guaranteed lowest price on a mattress set in Canada and save some time. Come in and buy from us. Now I know that’s easy for me to say but the reason I say it is because we have become Manitoba’s largest independent bedroom product distributor in the last 18 years. We compete against all the largest mattress companies in Canada every day and sales grow every Year. ” We hand out spec sheets every day and people go out and shop and come back and buy from us and say ” we just spent $10.00 more on gas than we need too, to make this purchase. We should have just bought from you in the first place.

However, I will say that nothing makes us happier than a potential customer spending an hour in the store with one of our long-term staff, checking us out for an hour or two in the market place, only to return and complete the purchase of the wanted item.

Whether it’s a a Mattress, a Futon, a Wallbed, a Bedroom Suite, a Platform bed, a Sofa Bed, a Bunk Bed, a Lamp, or an Electric Bed. We guarantee our price is the lowest in Canada, or if the product is the same Spec and their final dicker deal price is the same as ours; our Mattress set is free! You decide. Reward us for trying to change the industry, or check us out and then buy. Either way you win and we win. We even have an A + BBB rating. Which proves we solve every real warranted problem we see. See YOU in one of our stores soon.

The mattress business is stuck in the “old used car” sales era and will not change because it is so profitable. No other industry sells in the same fashion as the mattress industry and in no other industry does the consumer enjoy paying the highest price for their purchase as in the mattress industry. I sell mattresses so let me explain how you are constantly paying more for your purchase than you have to.

Let Me Demonstrate

You want to buy a Ford Fusion; so you do some internet shopping and away you go. You head to your local Ford dealer and their price for the car you want is $15000.00 full pop, no deals, no dickering. You go to the next dealer and their price is $17000.00; 50% reduced from $34000.00 and you dicker that dealer down to $16500.00. You gladly pay $1500.00 more for the same car because the first dealer would not dicker and/or lower his price. You wanted 50% off and a free $300.00 gift and that first guy was such a jerk for not budging on his price, so you paid this dealer $1500.00 more than the first because his /her smile was so nice and his/her” DEAL” was better. One was full price at $15000.00. One was $16500.00 and over 50% off listed price, and a $300.00 gift was included. They’re much nicer to deal with and over 50% off! You gladly pay $16500.00 for a $15000.00 Ford Fusion.

You read this and say to yourself “the consumer is not stupid” I would pay $15000.00 regular price and never take the fake 50% off deal at $16500.00. That would never happen! Let me just say it happens every minute in the mattress business and the consumer demands it. In fact, it makes the companies that work this way and their owners the richest companies in Canada. Let me explain why this happens and why you enjoy it so much and if you want to, when you understand it, how it can be changed.

The Blind Purchase

First of all you will never find two of the same mattresses from the same manufacturer in the same trading area. All the dealers of the same product get a different name and a different fabric covering; even if everything else is EXACTLY the same. So it starts off as what’s called a “Blind purchase”. You don’t know what you’re getting and you cannot compare the same product from the same manufacturer anywhere in your trading area.

So then how do you buy a mattress? You are being conditioned to buy according to “How does it feel?” and “What is the deal?”. Also “trust” is a big part of this game because the nice lady owner of such a huge profitable company who says they have the lowest price “must be telling the truth”. Subconsciously you think “I only buy a mattress every 5 to 10 years. What do I know? Let’s get this deal over with and buy whatever DEAL feels the best!”

It’s Similar To This One

Mattresses are sold every day on the “It’s similar to this one” line. You do some shopping and find the Sealy Arriva that you like at the first store; you go to the next store and the smiling sales person says “We don’t carry the Arriva. This mattress is similar to the one you saw at the other store. It’s $20.00 bucks less.” You go to the next place and a similar mattress is $20.00 bucks less again. You buy from the third guy because that’s enough time on this and go home. This is not a stated attitude, but it is a taught advertised sales technique that leaves the mattress industry as the only industry still selling a blind purchase.

Why Does This Still Work?

Why does this still work with educated people, in/or past 2011, whenever you read this? It’s because you know more about cars than mattresses as a body of everyday knowledge. You have points of reference in the car business you understand. Fuel economy ratings, safety ratings, warranty, consumer reports, resale value reports and most of all they are named the same thing in the 2, 5, or 10 stores you may visit. Not so in the mattress industry. There are points of reference but you have to go looking for them.

Remember, this is the process:

Get a half hour education from three or more stores about WHY their EXPENSIVE mattress is EXPENSIVE.

Find out which of the same COMPONENTS are in the less expensive mattresses in their store that you might like to buy for yourself. Compare the bed you want to their top of the line bed looking for components that are the same in both beds and the different amounts in each. Think of it as 400 horse power in the Jag and 146 in the Fiesta. You understand this difference now understand the differences here and you will save allot of money.

Get a specific brochure from that retailer on the exact mattress that you would buy from them if you bought in that store.

Do this in three or however many “makes you happy amount” of stores.

Sit at coffee and decide who to buy from; from the brochures not the pressure put on you in the store.

Summary

Start at the most expensive mattress in THAT STORE and make THAT SALESMAN compare THAT MATTRESS in THAT STORE to the one at THE PRICE POINT THAT YOU WANT TO PURCHASE.

Driving It Home With the Car Comparison

You are comparing two cars, both have power steering, or not, both have anti-lock brakes, or not. Do you get the gist of it here? Compare apples with apples. Now, you are comparing two mattresses. The expensive one has three inches of Latex on 800 Pocket Coils and the cheaper one has 1/2 an inch of Latex only in the middle on 600 Pocket Coils. Go up and down the line learn everything you can about the differences between the mattresses in that store, and then get a specific brochure for the one you would buy from that store and then leave. Collect as many brochures from as many stores as you want, sit down compare them over coffee or whatever and make up your mind. Go back and buy. Do this all in one day all in 4 or 6 hours and you will save a lot of money.

If you have read to the end of this you might be saying “All this for a 60 buck savings? Not worth my time”. I have one last story and I’m done.

I’ve been in this business for 25 years. I started out as a delivery driver and service rep, so I’ve seen every angle of this business. One day a friend of my son’s comes in to pick up a bed for a friend of hers that lives two hours away. She has a sales receipt in her hand, but it’s from a competitor. She apologizes that her friend did not buy from us, but she is not with her and she lives two hours away and she is heading to pick up the bed up just down the street. I say to her go get the bed and say to the sales person.”I own this bed please give me a spec sheet on it so I know what I bought” I said if the price of that bed is less than it would have been at our store I will give you a second bed to take home to your friend for free.”

She goes and picks up the $2300.00 bed her friend dickered down to $1700.00 and comes back to us spec sheet in hand. The customer did not know this bed was roll packed “meaning it was made in China” and the only difference this bed had to a $350.00 bed in our store was a couple of inches of padding on the top worth about $100.00 or $200.00 retail. Her friend over paid $1200.00 for her bed because she “Deal, Feel” shopped rather than brochure specification shopped.

The long of it was she drove a total of eight hours, home and back and home again to take the original purchase back and spec shop the second time. She bought from us and returned the original $2300.00 bed, reduced to $1700.00 sale price, with a true value about $500.00.

This happens every day in our Deal, Feel, Blind purchase, Dicker, multiple price, sale ends Tuesday at nine world. How does that old song go by The Who “We won’t be fooled again”?.

We have helpful video clips and product information that will keep you informed. Stay tuned for next week’s continuation on “How To Buy a Mattress”. I’m not done yet!

If you reside in an urban centre, it sure feels like living spaces are getting smaller these days. Many new condos on the market pass-off a den sized space as the second bedroom. If you are one of these homeowners who has a den-sized second bedroom here are some bedroom ideas that can help you maximise space.

Wall Beds

Wallbeds fold out from an attractive frame that stands secured against your room’s wall. There are several styles of Wallbeds incorporating shelving, cupboards and drawers into the frame to make for further conservative use of space.

There are even Wallbeds that can be used as desks or tables while not being used as a bed. The desk units include a large workspace with room behind it to hide those unsightly computer cords. When you fold the bed down, the desk simply lowers to the ground, but it stays level the entire time so no need to clear off the desk first.

Futons & Klik Klaks

Arguably the most common affordable solution to space limitations is the futon. It’s a university student’s ideal piece of furniture. Everyone knows about futons but one thing they may not know is that you can actually get a great quality mattress for a futon as well.

We have a wide variety of futon mattresses available with all of our futon frames. Firm, plush, coils or pocket coils and even Space Foam™ futon mattresses are all available. These mattresses are not the lumpy hard futon mattress your friend has in their basement. They are excellent quality, and when placed on one of our top quality solid hardwood frames, they are supported just like a mattress on a platform bed (no metal bars) which provides proper support for the mattress and those enjoying it.

If you don’t care to deal with a frame and mattress separately for your spare bed solution, Kliks Klaks are another “insta-bed” alternative. They are a simple, compact, modern design that conveniently clicks down into a bed and then clicks back up into a sofa.

Hide-a-Beds / Sofa Beds

The hide-a-bed or Sofa Bed provides you with the traditional look of a couch, with a mattress folded inside. If you are going for a more formal decor, than this is the best choice. The mattresses in these beds are thinner than those of their futon counterparts. A four inch Bonnell coil with one inch of padding comes standard, but you can upgrade to a very comfortable pocket coil mattress as well.

I just had two separate customers in the store. One had bought a bed a few months ago and just wanted an accessory and the other bought a bed from us five years ago and wanted a pillow. The pillow she had for years died.

The Every Day Mattress

The first customer just wanted to tell me how my bed had changed his expletive deleted life. He was a very nice forty something client but he just could not find any five letter words to tell me how much he loved his bed. He said “That mattress changed my expletive deleted life!”. It amazed him that a good bed made that much of a difference, or any difference at all for that matter.

The staff at Best Sleep Centre have been trying for years to get people to buy a mattress and not a deal. Shop via the specification of the mattress and don’t look for the deal the other company pretends to give you with the straightest face and the nicest smile. This same customer also said that although he had spent $1800.00 in our store he was prepared, after research on the internet, to spend much more for the type of bed we sold him. He was very happy to pay full price and get the best price in Manitoba (my words not his).

The Every Day Pillow

The other customer wanted a pillow and was apologetic for taking my time for such a small sale. She had not slept in four nights. Her pillow had died and she needed to get this done. I told her we were happy to help and she did not need to be so Canadian and apologize for doing something I have been asking people to do for years: take your pillow seriously and spend a half to a full hour in our store laying down and trying different pillows until you find the one you like. People wonder why they have ten $15.00 dollar pillows in their home they never use. It’s because they walked into Walmart or Super Value and grabbed a nice LOOKING fluffy pillow off the rack with some eggs and took it home. That’s no way to buy a pillow! She spent $110.00 on a pillow that will last her five or more years. She will sleep better now and in one year that pillow will save her a day off work, or a trip to the doctor, or a massage therapist. She will have paid for that pillow.

The Weekend Mattress

The other conversation I want to have is cottage beds. I want to ask a question. Are you not off to the cottage to get some rest. Why would you have a fifteen year old bed “that came with the cottage”, or why did you “bring one from home that’s ten years old”? A cottage is worth 60 to 500,000.00 these days. It just makes sense to have decent beds to end a “great day at the beach” or “a great day fishing”.

I know it only gets three days use a week and only in the summer, but still, you will enjoy the cabin better if it does not send you to the chiropractor on your return to the city. Put as good a bed in the cottage as in the house and give what I’m suggesting a try. As for guest beds at the cottage, I know you are not going to spend as much on them as on the master, but here’s a suggestion: tell potential guests you have two or three guest room beds to offer, then tell them that the one they get is determined by the quality of the steak and or wine and or chocolate they bring as a thank you gift for having them out at the cottage. Then surprise them with the best bed they have ever had at a friend’s cottage and watch the thank you gifts increase in value on every visit. If they slip put them in the lesser expensive one for a night (this is almost a joke). So you understand what I’m saying. A good friend also deserves a decent bed and you deserve a good steak for thinking about them.

The Moral of the Story

The mattress and the pillows are your two least expensive items. A $2000.00 bed used by two people for eight years costs $125.00 to sleep on per year. More money is spent on shoes or pizza. They are the two most important pieces of furniture in your home, no matter where home is.
